Antique 1760 Malta/Valletta Probst Prospectus Portus Marini Insulae Melitae Scarce

This copperplate engraving made by Cartographer Georg Balthasar Probst (1732-1801) is in great shape and a unique piece to own. The work is titled Prospectus Portus Marini Insulae Melitae (Prospect of the Sea Harbor of the Island of Malta. It's a view of the Valletta Harbor in Malta in 1760. The matting around the artwork has red and green hand-drawn lines in green and red with a metallic golden foil accent. The copperplate engraving is framed with glass and a finished wooden frame. The wooden portion of the frame has some damage as shown in the photos. The back of the piece has a crocodile printed paper, wire picture hanger, and a small sticker in the upper right-hand corner that says "v. Binsbergen." The front has a handwritten "113" in the upper right-hand corner with the title of the piece, the name of the Cartographer, and more in writing on the bottom. No provenance is available on this piece. This is a genuine look into the bustling life in the harbor of Valletta around the year 1760. Sailors, merchants, and soldiers working away and the harbor busy with ships.

Condition: There are scratches on the right and left hand side of the frame where the dark wooden finish has been worn off. There are a few small dings on various spots on the frame. The glass is in great shape with no visible flaws. Please carefully review the images, as they serve as an extension of the description.

Approximate dimensions:

With the frame: 22.1" x 0.6" x 18.3"

1" wide with the wire hanger hooks.

Weight: 4 lbs. 6.5 oz.
