Antique Japanese Wood Block Print Woman in Kimono Toya Kuni
This stunning Japanese art piece features a woman wearing an ornate kimono nested in a shelter with her hair up in a bun with chopsticks she looks over intently at a butterfly as the water in front of her gently flows. Cherry blossoms, a bamboo fence, and mountains are in the background. Her kimono has intricate details such as flowers, and Buddhist manjis. The Buddhist manji is a scared symbol that represents the Buddha's footprints. It is a symbol of peace and good fortune that is used in many Buddhist contexts, including marking the location of temples and decorating clothing. This symbol passed into the iconography of China and Japan, where it has been used to denote plurality, abundance, prosperity, and long life. The piece is framed and matted. The back has a small rip in the paper on the bottom right-hand corner. I've included a few pictures of what can be seen by gently peeling it back. The front of the framing is glass. There is a small sheet of paper taped to the back that says "Toya Kuni." The back of the framed piece is stamped by the framer "Lindquist & Holaine Paint Store, Rockford, Ill." From what I can tell this appears to be real, and not a print. There are a few gentle creases in the paper that can be seen through the glass framing (see photos). The outer wood portion of the frame appears to have been handpainted metallic silver. This would be a beautiful piece for any home or office!
Condition: The piece is in excellent condition inside the frame with a few small creases that can be seen under the glass. The frame and matting are in good shape. The wooden frame appears to have been handpainted. There is a small rip on the bottom right-hand side of the paper backing on the piece (see photos). The front glass is in great condition. Please carefully review the images as they serve as an extension of the description.
