Antique Pre-Wedgwood Blue Jasperware Vase Vessel

This listing features a rare and historically significant Antique Blue Jasperware Vase, believed to be from the pre-Wedgwood era of English pottery. It bears the marking “Estbs 1657” on the base, along with a partially legible “England” stamp and the initials “LC”, indicating it was likely produced by an earlier or independent manufacturer before the formal rise of Wedgwood as a brand.

The piece features a matte cobalt-blue body with applied white classical-style relief, in the iconic jasperware style that would later be perfected and popularized by Josiah Wedgwood, often referred to as the "father of English pottery."

?️ About Wedgwood & Jasperware

Josiah Wedgwood founded the Wedgwood company in 1759, though some of its artistic and technical roots can be traced further back through earlier English potteries. One of his greatest innovations was jasperware, a fine unglazed stoneware developed in the 1770s, best known for its matte finish and contrasting relief decorations, usually in white.

This piece predates that formal branding and may represent either a transitional period or an independent workshop that contributed to the aesthetic and technical heritage that Wedgwood would later formalize. Pieces bearing the “Estbs 1657” mark are sometimes associated with earlier pottery lines or commemorative branding reflecting long-established traditions in ceramics prior to Josiah Wedgwood's time.

Condition Report

As expected from a true antique, this piece displays signs of age and use:

  • Light scratch near one of the white relief motifs.

  • Fleabite on bottom base edge.

  • Fine cracks in the white applied relief portions.

  • Scuffs and dust inside vessel.

  • Two manufacturing flaws on the blue body — not chips, but visible inconsistencies in the coating.

  • Wear to base and overall surface consistent with age.

  • Structurally stable and visually impressive.

This is a display-worthy piece with a story, not a pristine reproduction.

A Piece of Pottery History

This vessel is more than just décor — it's a snapshot of pre-industrial British ceramic design, likely made during or influenced by the traditions that Josiah Wedgwood later revolutionized. It offers an opportunity to own a piece connected to the early lineage of English stoneware, perfect for connoisseurs of antique ceramics, Wedgwood history, or decorative arts.

Please reach out with questions or to request additional photos. This is a rare opportunity to own a historically rich example of early English jasperware. I do not know the provenance of the piece.
